Osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bone”, is a condition in which the bones gradually lose their normal density. Although this occurs most often in women post-menopause, it can happen at an earlier age, and it can also affect men.
After discovering that she herself had the condition, Julia took a scientifically based 40-hour training, Yoga for Osteoporosis. It has increased her strength and confidence, and she has been teaching Yoga for Osteoporosis workshops for twelve years.
When practiced daily over time, the twelve poses that comprise the Yoga for Osteoporosis program have the potential to enhance new bone growth. In addition, a consistent yoga practice of this kind builds muscle strength, supporting alignment, and improves balance – all of which help mitigate osteoporosis and its effects. In this workshop, Julia will provide an explanation of what occurs with osteoporosis, and why yoga is an effective antidote. She will teach you the 12 Yoga for Osteoporosis poses (with modifications, as needed) and will provide a handout with instructions on how to incorporate the program into your life.
